"National Day of Outrage" to honor Atatiana Jefferson, Monday, October 28
The funeral of Atatiana "Tay" Jefferson, 28, was held last Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas.Hundreds of mourners celebrated the memory of a young woman described as a "hands-on aunt who took her nephews to arcades and playgrounds; a pet lover who could not say no to animals in need...and a pillar of family life.On Saturday, October 12, 2019, white police officer Aaron Dean killed Jefferson while she was in her home.He had responded to a non emergency call made by a neighbor, who was alarmed that Jefferson's front door was open.According to news accounts, Dean never identified himself as a police officer and approached the house by peering through a back window.Jefferson had her legal handgun pointed at the window; Dean shot her. This Monday, October 28, 2019, multiple cities (including New York, Seattle, Atlanta, Miami, Fayetteville, Raleigh, and Las Vegas) will participate in the "National Day of Outrage in Honor of Atatiana Jefferson," sponsored by Until Freedom, "a social justice organization rooted in the leadership of diverse people to address systemic racism and racial justice."The purpose of the rallies is to "Demand Justice for Atatiana Jefferson and the countless black women killed at the hands of police violence."Everyone is asked to wear black.
